About the Film:

What happens when the pursuit of the American Dream collides with family legacy, estate planning, and the tax code?

Presented by the Quad City Estate Planning Council, the acclaimed feature documentary Death & Taxes tells a deeply personal and surprisingly emotional story. The film tracks filmmaker Justin Schein’s late father, Harvey Schein—a Depression-era Brooklyn native who rose to become a top 1970s corporate CEO running Sony’s American arm. Over his final 20 years, Harvey became fixated on shielding his amassed fortune from the estate tax, an obsession that pushed his family to the brink.

Weaving together decades of intimate home videos, archival footage, and insights from economists, policy experts, and public figures across the political spectrum (including Robert Reich, Paul Krugman, and Grover Norquist), Death & Taxes transforms a technical debate over fiscal policy into a gripping human drama about wealth, family dynamics, and what we truly leave behind.
